Il canto, di origine religiosa e poi riadattato su contenuti politici, fu ripreso e rielaborato all'interno della Highlander Folk School (Tennessee) di Miles e Zilphia Horton, che ne fecero uno dei cavalli di battaglia del Civil Rights Movement. Anche Pete Seeger ne diede una sua versione. Storicamente, però, la sua prima esecuzione in pubblico nell'ambito del Civil Rights Movement è dovuta ai Wildwood Boys, al Tangent di Palo Alto, il 23 febbraio 1963. Da segnalare però che la prima incisione in assoluto risaliva al 1951, nell'album Get On Board di Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee.
