E'una canzone scritta per denunciare il perdurare dello stato di discriminazione dei cattolici in terra d’Irlanda, sotto il controllo-dominio inglese ai tempi delle proteste civili nell’Irlanda del Nord, era il 1965 e l’anno precedente era iniziata a Belfast la campagna per la giustizia sociale, quando la comunità cattolica - prima dell'escalation dello scontro violento tra IRA da una parte, esercito inglese, polizia e gruppi paramilitari protestanti dall'altra - promosse importanti iniziative non violente, come la campagna per la giustizia sociale e la campagna di disobbedienza civile. Fu il Bloody Sunday del 1972 a mettere di fatto in crisi l'approccio non violento alla soluzione del conflitto e a sprofondare l'Irlanda del Nord nel periodo denominato The Troubles, la cosiddetta guerra a bassa densità, un coacervo di violenza e sordi rancori, di marce per la pace e bombe.
